My dear friend Marie Galligan passed away on 25th May 2025. Marie had only spent 7 weeks at Laurel Lodge and she was the happiest that I had seen her in years. Thank you Renee and staff for the care and love you all bestowed on Marie. Bless you all. Dee Hussey

I recently visited Laurel lodge on a professional call , their two therapy dogs Maisy and daisy had arrived the previous day so there was huge excitement between residents staff and families helping these beautiful dogs to settle into their new home . I had the pleasure of meeting Simona Maria and Sinead who were exceptionally welcoming . The nursing home is currently involved in Irish Hospice Foundation Caru programme and have great ideas for resident care and support in the future . A beautiful well laid out building . Highly recommend based on what I’ve seen .

My father has been a resident at Laurel Lodge for a year now & he absolutely loves it. I chose it based on family recommendations & I haven’t regretted it. The staff are all very caring, attentive & gentle with him. They got through the entire Covid stretch with no residents testing positive which says a lot. The food is good & they've a full social calendar, mass etc. & they keep me updated on his well-being, medication etc. He’s very happy & calls it home. I would be happy to recommend it to anyone thinking of placing a loved one in their care.

The dementia unit is overcrowded and HIQA reported in its March 2017 report that it has too high an occupancy rate, which was even acknowledged by a representative from the nursing home in this same report. They used to have a large and open sitting room looking out on the carpark and trees with lots of sunlight coming in and couches for families and residents to sit and chat in. When the nursing home changed ownership this lovely sitting room was converted into a double bedroom for new residents and they opened up a tiny and darker new room the size of a small utility room instead for visitors to use. There is also no area in the entire place for family members to sleep should they need to rest if a loved one is unwell overnight or, in the worst case, dying. There is also very, very little effort in terms of events and special activities for the dementia unit at least. They consider mass and eating to be activities which of course they are not and HIQA does not deem to be so either. They are not investing in proper chairs for residents and my mother's chair was found by an occupational therapist to have a broken foot rest and no head support despite her suffering from a very severe leaning problem due to her condition. Some carers are blatantly disrespectful. When I brought in a pair of adidas tracksuit bottoms for my mother once, I was told not to be buying expensive brands like adidas because they didn't need them, and they told me just to buy in Penneys. I told this particular 'caregiver' that these were my mother's last years and there is no reason for her to be dressed in cheap clothes when the ones I bought were better quality and had a surface less prone to food stains. Adidas is hardly luxury in any case. My mother's shoes were also not regularly cleaned by staff, and would often have food stains on them when I came to visit. The biggest issue was that they do not observe patients enough during mealtimes which is something several people have complained about and I had to have my mother's local doctor intervene who confirmed my mother's weight loss was too much in too short a timeframe and recommended she be put on supplements in addition to daily meals. The nursing home management will every time deny any complaint you have, until you back it up as I did with reports from external qualified experts such as an occupational therapist who found the chair my mother was using to be utterly unsuitable, broken foot rest, and no head support, also too wide and too deep for her small frame. I know there is not a great selection of nursing homes around this area but please seek advice from places like the Alzheimer's Society who may be able to advise you as to where is currently the best and most safe place.
