Spent almost 4weeks here after being in UHL from December to January. I would give more stars if I could. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They took great care of me constantly making sure I had help when needed. The physiotherapist actively took interest in my condition and guided me well. The food was beautifully prepared and served. An excellent variety was on offer. Every member of staff was very welcoming. Highly recommend.

My mother was discharged from hospital to the Lakes Nursing Home for two weeks of HSE respite and physiotherapy after a four-week hospital stay. Staff were fully informed of her poor mobility and medical needs, including assistance with walking, hygiene, and prescribed creams. However, when we visited the next day, she had not been washed or dressed, no creams had been applied, and she had been left sitting in a chair all morning without appropriate cushioning. Staff on duty were unaware of her documented care requirements and described it as an oversight. The same issues occurred again two days later, and she was left waiting for assistance to use the bathroom despite using the call buzzer, resulting in a toileting accident. Despite raising concerns with senior staff and later the manager, the only explanation given was staff shortages and changeovers. Due to the continued lack of basic care, we arranged to bring her home two days later as soon as community supports were in place. Our experience was extremely disappointing. While staff were polite, there was a clear lack of staffing and care. The manager offered only an apology and did not speak to my mother directly. Based on our experience, the Lakes Nursing Home should be avoided for anyone requiring nursing care.

Hi all, re my late mum Eileen Costelloe. She had 2 long term stays at the Lakes Nursing Home , Killaloe Co Clare. Our experience was that, staff was so loving and caring towards my mum. The food was absolutely lovely. Mum had celebrated her 89th Birthday, that Jackie and other lovely staff members had arranged. Towards the end, mum was rushed very early one morning into the Limerick Regional Hospital, that day the Nursing Home Manageress Shannon, rang me out of concern to say that. If the hospital medical team can not do anything more for mum, then bring my mum her back home to the Lakes Nursing Home. That was the case and we did bring mum back home to the Nursing Home. They looked after mum with the utmost care and dignity for her last few days. As mum had passed away on 7th August. From our experience, all the staff had shown total care and dedication towards my mum and for that lm so very grateful . Yours Tom Costello

The most awful place to be……had to place a relative there for two weeks but we decided to check the place out as his usual Nursing Home Respite had to be cancelled so he went to the Lakes. We were shown a woman’s room whom her family had decorated but we were given the impression all rooms were similar, as my relative is non verbal, cannot drink from a cup and has to be spoon fed, he was treated awful…..never again will he be put in a place like the Lakes, but it’s so sad that the people in charge can be so cruel to vulnerable people….and get away with it….i am still so angry…..

My mother (who had the beginnings of dementia at the time but was there for recouperation after a medical condition) was transferred to The Lakes from St John's for a few weeks convalescence. We opted for The Lakes because my father had spent 5 weeks there 5 years ago after an accident and he had a very positive experience from start to finish. To say that we were underwhelmed with so many areas this time is an understatement. The room, while clean, was dark and the window faced the wall opposite it. The room had an ensuite toilet and basin but no shower. On arrival, the receptionist (who was new since our previous experience) was borderline rude and it was hard to even get her attention most days. We were told the room number on the 1st floor but had to find the way ourselves. Many patients sit in the corridors/lobbies for hours on end, some crying or asking for help. Some patients who are room or bed-bound sit in front of blaring tvs all day with their doors open so everyone around has to hear it. The food was fine, the care staff were lovely, the catering staff were lovely, some of the nursing staff were lovely but many were not easy to communicate with or just didn't seem bothered. There was a programme of activities but they were at random times in different locations so my mother kept missing them and because she is an active and sociable person, she got very lonely while there. There was country music concerts on the tv in the communal areas etc and some music played but very outdated ideas of entertainment. I think the thing that I noticed for those that were physically on the move, unless they went to the tiny enclosed 'smoking garden', there is nowhere safe or fenced in for patients/residents to walk or sit in unless closely supervised because the small grounds are totally open to the road, carpark and adjascent houses. It seems like a simple thing to provide for people who don't want to spend their whole day in a very warm, stale smelling room. I felt my mother's wellbeing declined a lotin the 3 weeks she was there. Maybe this Nursing Home could be updated, upgraded, given some more modern ideas for how to keep residents as active and healthy and stimulated as possible because performing the basic functions for a body is no longer enough for a nursing home to provide.
