My mother Laura is in Kiltipper 3 years now and to be honest it’s the happiest place for someone with dementia to be and to also have the facility of a large coffee shop were you can go and sit in homely surroundings with family and friends in comparison to several other care centres

I am writing this review to make others aware of this facility before entering or if you are organising on behalf of a family member to stay here. My father had knee replacement surgery and being 88 we felt it might be helpful to organise some post operative respite for both him and especially for my mother who at 86 at the time would have found it difficult enough to look after him at home in that initial time after surgery. We were given recommendations for Kiltipper Woods so we decided to go ahead with it. At almost €2000 for the week we really expected the highest of care here including daily physio sessions to help him recuperate. Sadly this was not the case. Within the 7 day period that he stayed he stayed most of him time in his bed with very little physio offered. The staff decided to change his dressing which should not have happened at the instructions of his Surgeon. The food was very poor and by the 5th day he just wanted to get out and home. On the same day they told him that he had an infection and that they needed him to stay in over the upcoming weekend. They were giving him an oral antibiotic. I found this a bit suspicious so I called a friend of mine who is a nurse and asked her for her advice. She said that if it wasn't an IV antibiotic there would be no need for the extra nights stay. And at almost €300 per night for each extra night I had my suspicions about them trying to fill an empty bed over the weekend. So I decided at that stage that he was coming home infection or not. At about 3am the morning before his departure date my father called me scared not knowing where he was or who he was. He was obviously hallucinating from whatever strong sedative they had given him to sleep. It was one of the most upsetting calls I've ever had. I tried to calm him and told him to press the button for the nurse on duty. Eventually somebody came in and said that they would look after him. I didn't sleep a wink thinking about him and the state he was in. I called his Surgeon the following day to tell him the situation and to say he was extremely angry with them was an understatement. He told me that under no circumstances should they have changed his dressing and if he does have an infection they should have contacted him as his Surgeon immediately. I was directed by his Surgeon to go in and get him out straight away. And to contact the public health nurse to look at his wound for any infection. And also to stop any antiobiotic they had given him as well as any strong pain relief prescription tablets as these may be causing the night hallucinations. The next day I went straight in and told them I was taking him home. The exit process took quite some time as they tried to drag it out between expressing concern over this infection etc. Eventually we got him out and home. The public health nurse visited over the next couple of days and surprise surprise, there was no infection in the wound. So I know this is a long winded review, but I just wanted to give you a broad review of our experience as a family but more importantly my own fathers experience as a patient after fairly extensive surgery. This is a very expensive facility and they advertise high quality care and facilities. Sadly we didn't experience this and the effort to extend my fathers stay because of an infection in his wound which we found after consultation by our local Public Health Nurse was in fact not infected would make me think this facility is more about the money and not about the patient and patient care.

My vulnerable elderly mum went here post -operatively. Staff didn't check her on the first night there and she didn't get to bed until after midnight.. She had low blood pressure post operatively. Very disappointed. While I spoke to the manager he never returned my call. Breakfast was cold. My mum didn't want to complain but for the price per week I just wanted other people to know.

Top class facility which cared for my Aunty for almost a decade and a half. I got to see how much they cared for both the living and when people's time come the care offered for people as they pass. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone.

I had a friend in Kiltipper woods care centre and some of the staff treated him nicely. However, there were some staff who spoke in a degrading manner to the residents. A lot of the residents have dementia and are unable to tell anyone what is going on for them. Comments made when my friend was being changed and couldn't open his legs were "well your well able to open your mouth" absolutely disgraceful way to speak to anyone. I wouldn't put my nearest and dearest friends here. I have no idea how they won nursing home of the year, must be a brown envelope job. I could go on all night but I won't. So if you are putting your loved one in a home please check it out thoroughly.
